Historical & literary context
Paul exhorts Timothy to be strengthened by grace in Christ Jesus and entrust what he has heard to faithful people able to teach others. The surrounding illustrations of a soldier, athlete, and farmer emphasize endurance and patient labor. Read 2:1–7 together with the instructions on gentle correction in 2:22–26.
Begin with grace
Paul’s first instruction is to be strengthened by the grace in Christ Jesus. Teaching others does not move us beyond dependence on the Lord. Disciple-makers remain disciples who need correction, rest, and growth. You do not need to pretend to have mastered every question. You do need honesty, willingness to learn, and responsible relationships within the church. Maturity is not measured only by influence or the number of people you meet. Faithfulness in ordinary commitments, repentance, and patient love are essential to credible teaching.
Entrust the truth faithfully
The chain of transmission includes Paul, Timothy, faithful people, and others they teach. The message is entrusted rather than reinvented. Read Scripture together, explain the gospel clearly, and distinguish biblical teaching from your preferences. Select resources whose sources and terms you can examine, and ask your church for guidance. Baptist evangelical discipleship gives Scripture governing authority while recognizing that Christians disagree on secondary doctrines. Name differences without turning every meeting into controversy. Faithful teaching makes room for questions and returns to the passage rather than relying on the teacher’s personality.
A sustainable next step
Disciple-making may begin with two people reading a Gospel, praying, and practicing what they learn. Agree on a manageable rhythm and obtain the other person’s willingness. Set boundaries about privacy, availability, and the kind of help you can offer. Do not replace professional care or pastoral responsibilities with an informal relationship. Review learning together: what did the passage say, how did you respond, and where is help needed? AI can support research, but do not submit another person’s private story without permission. The aim is growing faithfulness to Jesus, including the ability to encourage someone else.

Practice & reflection
Discuss and reflect
- Why does Paul begin with grace before speaking about teaching?
- What qualities matter in people entrusted with teaching?
- What practices can you continue over the next three months?
- Who could help you develop a responsible plan?
Write a four-meeting plan to read Mark with a willing person, including prayer, discussion, and one practical response each time. Review it with a church leader. Continue one daily habit and one weekly community commitment from this course.
