Historical & literary context

Matthew ends with the risen Jesus meeting the eleven in Galilee. The commission follows worship and the acknowledgment that some doubted (28:16–17). Jesus’ authority frames the mission, and his presence sustains it. Making disciples includes baptism and teaching obedience, not merely securing a quick response.

Interpretation & teaching

The authority of the risen Lord

Jesus claims authority in heaven and on earth. Witness rests on who he is and what God has done through his death and resurrection. We do not speak because we possess social superiority or flawless answers. We speak because the good news is entrusted to Christ’s people. The scope of all nations challenges ethnic favoritism and narrow concern for people like ourselves. Mission can include global sending and faithful attention to neighbors, coworkers, and family. Each person deserves dignity, listening, and a clear account of what we believe.

Explain the good news

A basic gospel explanation should make clear that God is holy and loving, humans are sinners, Jesus died for sins and rose, and people are called to repent and trust him. First Corinthians 15:1–8 keeps the cross and resurrection central. A personal story can show how you responded, but your experience is not the gospel’s foundation. Avoid promising that faith removes every hardship. When asked a difficult question, it is faithful to admit uncertainty and look for a reliable answer. Ask permission before entering a spiritual conversation, and leave room for the other person’s real questions.

Witness without manipulation

The commission is about making disciples, with baptism and teaching as ongoing parts of the journey. It is not permission to coerce, shame, or treat people as projects. First Peter 3:15–16 calls for a reasoned answer with gentleness and respect. Pray, listen, speak truthfully, and entrust outcomes to God. When someone wants to learn more, offer to read a Gospel together and connect them with a faithful church. Respect a decision to decline. Evangelism and practical love belong together, but assistance should never be conditioned on a religious response.

Practical application

Practice & reflection

Discuss and reflect

  1. What does Jesus’ authority contribute to the commission?
  2. What elements of the gospel are central in 1 Corinthians 15:1–8?
  3. How can testimony support rather than replace the gospel?
  4. What would gentleness look like in a conversation you anticipate?
Your weekly assignment

Pray for one person and listen to their concerns. If they welcome it, share a brief explanation of the gospel or invite them to read a Gospel with you. Respect their answer. Review your words with a trusted Christian for clarity.

A prayer to make your own

Risen Lord, give me courage and humility. Help me listen well, speak truthfully about you, and love people without trying to control their response.
